In the US, high school covers grades 9 through 12, typically for students aged 14 to 19. Placement for students is based on age and academic background. The school year runs from late August to May and lasts approximately nine months.

College preparatory schools — or prep schools, are private high schools in the US. They can be day or boarding schools and may be co-educational or single-sex.
