About:

St. Johnsbury Academy, founded in 1842, is an independent, private, coeducational, non-profit boarding and day school, enrolling students in grades 9-12 and postgraduate. The campus is located in a beautiful, small-town setting of St. Johnsbury, Vermont. St. Johnsbury was named #1 Small Town for Adventure by National Geographic magazine.

The student body is equally divided between boys and girls. The Academy enrolls more than 900 students, of which approximately two thirds are day students, and the remaining third are boarders. Day students come from 50 Vermont and New Hampshire communities. Boarding students come from 15 states and 30 countries. St. Johnsbury was named #1 Small Town for Adventure by National Geographic magazine.

The Academy offers more than 200 courses at four levels of difficulty. Courses offered include 25 Advanced Placement, 9 Technical programs, more than 40 visual and performing arts courses, six engineering courses and five foreign languages (Chinese, French, Japanese, Latin and Spanish).

  • Over 930 students enrolled (both day and boarding) and international students come from 30 different countries
  • The town of St. Johnsbury is just 2 1/2 hours from Montreal and 3 hours from Boston
  • National Geographic Adventure Magazine listed St. Johnsbury Vermont as the best small town for adventure in America!
  • The curriculum includes over 220 academic courses
  • Leadership Programs include ‘Student Government’, ‘Dorm Council’, ‘National Honor Society’ and ‘Gay-Straight Union’
  • Boarding students have access to all the facilities on campus and are within walking distance to movie theatres, restaurants, and shops
  • Each weekend, the Resident Program schedules activities for boarding students that include day trips to Boston and Montreal, skiing and snowboarding every weekend in the winter (the nearest mountain is 25 minutes away), shopping, sightseeing, rockclimbing, go-cart racing and many more

Athletics:

Sports plays a significant part of a St Johnsbury students life, with 48 interscholastic teams and 20 Intramural sports.

(Fall sports): Field hockey, American football, soccer, cross-country.

(Winter sports): Alpine skiing, basketball, gymnastics, ice-hockey, indoor track, Nordic skiing, wrestling.

(Spring sports): Golf, track and field, baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis.

St. Johnsbury Academy offers a rigorous, wide-ranging, 220-course-plus, standards-based curriculum designed to meet the needs and interests of a wide range of abilities, career goals, and interests. Nearly 30 Advanced Placement courses are offered.

Entry Requirements:

Students must complete the application for admission, including the required essay, and send it with the $100 application fee to the Director of Admission, 1000 Main Street, St. Johnsbury, VT  05819 (online applications are also admitted).

Confidential reference forms must be completed by your English and mathematics teachers, as well as a personal reference. These references should be returned by the recommenders directly to the St. Johnsbury Academy Admissions Office. (It is customary for you to provide them with a stamped, addressed envelope for this purpose).

  • Complete the Records Release form including your parent’s signature, and take it to your school counselor. We cannot act upon your application until we have received your complete school record.

Contact the Admissions Office to arrange a personal interview.  If distance makes it impossible, a Skype interview can be arranged.

The SSAT is recommended, but not required.

If you are applying for financial aid, your parents must complete a financial aid application.

Housing:

The campus is home to students from across the country and the world, creating a global community.

Eight dormitories are spread around the Academy campus, four each for boys and girls. Different in size and personality, each dorm houses faculty advisors, their families, and students.

Tuition:

Tuition for the 2016-2017 school year is $51,560 for boarding students and $16,315 for day students.

Financial Aid / Scholarships:

St. Johnsbury Academy has a limited financial aid budget that is awarded on a need basis to boarding students. For financial aid consideration, we recommend that online applications be complete by April 1st. St. Johnsbury Academy is utilizing the online service of Financial Aid for School Tuition (FAST) to process applications for financial aid.  FAST will be the standard submission format for all applications.
