Alfred State is a residential college of technology providing career-focused education enriched by the liberal arts. More than 70 dynamic majors are offered with an emphasis on combining traditional classrooms and applied learning from the real world. Fields of study include agriculture, business, health, applied and engineering technologies, the arts and sciences and more. More than 3,700 students are enrolled and the student:faculty ratio is 20:1. International students represent more than 160 different countries.
Alfred State is located in the beautiful Southern Tier of New York State, surrounded by lakes, ponds, wetlands and state parks. It is 15 miles north of the Pennsylvania border, 70 miles south of Rochester, and 90 miles southeast of Buffalo.

Athletics:
The Alfred State SUNY athletics team are known as the “Pioneers”. They are currently a D III independent school, and are members of the NCAA Division III.
Men’s teams: Baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming / diving, track and field, and wrestling.
Women’s teams: Basketball, cross-country, equestrian, soccer, softball, swimming / diving, track and field, and volleyball.

Alfred State believes that a student’s residence hall experience should be as individually suited to the student’s needs and interests as possible. On this basis, the school offers a lifestyle approach to residence hall living. Within the limits of college policy, various lifestyle areas are offered, and students may choose the area which best suits them.

Entry requirements:
- Applicants must possess a recognized high school/secondary school diploma
- Individual program requirements must be satisfied
- Applicants with previous university/post-secondary experience must submit an official transcript(s) from each post-secondary institution attended. If applicable, students must also supply proof of university/post-secondary graduation.
- Submit official SAT or ACT scores if applicable. Standardized test score (ACT or SAT) results are reviewed for some scholarship considerations, and for those interested in intercollegiate athletics.
- Applicants must submit proof of English proficiency via the TOEFL or IELTS tests. Minimum test scores required are: TOEFL (PBT) 500, TOEFL (IBT) 61, and IELTS 5.0.
- One academic letter of reference written in English, including a valid email address to contact the reference.
- Applicants must submit an official bank statement on bank letterhead to indicate that the applicant or sponsor has sufficient funds to pay for the first year of study in the United States. The bank statement must contain a fresh ink signature or stamp from a bank official in order to be considered official.
- Applicants must complete a 1-2 page personal essay with their application. The personal essay is to be written by the student in English. Examples of content include why you are applying to study in the United States, reasons for selecting the field of study chosen, work experience relevant to your field of study, special interests and abilities you have, plans for further study and/or employment after completion of your first degree, reasons why you want to study at Alfred, and how you can contribute to the campus.

- There will be non-billed costs for books, supplies, transportation and personal expenses that vary by student.
- The approximate cost of living during all vacation periods (including one summer/three months) for two years is $2,000.
- Students coming from warm climates should plan an additional amount of $200 to purchase warm clothing.
- There is a one time new student orientation fee.
- Some programs may require a laptop computer or other required tools which would be an extra cost

Financial Aid / Scholarships:
Two scholarships are automatically awarded to international students who qualify. An application is not necessary for these scholarships. These scholarships are only available to students beginning their studies in August.
