About:
The University of Alabama is a public research university situated near downtown Birmingham, Alabama, and the historic Five Points South district. Birmingham is the largest city of Alabama and the metropolitan area contains a population of close to 1.2 million people. The city is home to several cultural and entertainment venues and throughout the year plays host to numerous cultural festivals showcasing music, films, and regional heritage. Ethnic-style restaurants, shops, art galleries, and music clubs are within walking distance from UAB’s campus.
UAB started out as an academic extension center in 1936 and since then has grown and developed into a doctoral research university and academic medical center. UAB is part of three educational institutions that make up the University of Alabama System – the other two are the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
In the fall of 2013, 18,568 students from more than 110 countries were enrolled at UAB pursuing studies in 140 programs of study in 12 academic divisions leading to bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees in the social and behavioral sciences, the liberal arts, business, education, engineering. Additionally, UAB also has the primary responsibility for meeting the state’s health professional needs and thus offers a comprehensive range of programs which encompass both basic preparation and sophisticated graduate and specialty training in medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, the health professions, and public health.
UAB student life is rich with many activities and organizations. Events range from relaxing at free movies or comedy shows, involvement in student governance, cheering on the Blazers, writing for the Kaleidoscope student newspaper, rappelling down a cliff, hiking the Grand Canyon and so much more. Each semester brings new events, new organizations, opportunities to make friends, get physically fit, learn, socialize, relax, and have a good time becoming a part of the Blazer community!

Athletics:
The University of Alabama Birmingham’s athletics team are known as the “Blazers”. They compete in the Conference USA, and are members of the NCAA Division I.
Men’s teams: Baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis.
Women’s teams: Basketball, bowling, cross-country, golf, rifle, sand volleyball, soccer, softball, tennis, track, and volleyball.

UAB offers both on-campus and off-campus housing options. For on-campus housing, UAB has six residence halls that all offer suite-style and apartment-style living. Minimum requirements for current international high school students:
- a completed UAB application and the $30 application fee (nonrefundable)*
- proof of English proficiency (unless English is your first language). Minimum TOEFL score of 77 or an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with at least a 5.5 on each section of the examination. International students who have completed at least 24 semester hours of transferable credit at a U.S. college or university do not have to submit proof of English proficiency
- official transcripts of your high school results sent directly, by your school, to UAB via Naviance eDocs, Docufied by Parchment, postal mail or express courier. All documents must be sent in English**
