Located in the town of Orono along the Stillwater River, the University of Maine offers a strong traditional education at an affordable price. UMaine is the state’s land grant university and flagship institution, and it is one of New England’s premier universities. We help students create success stories — with a wide variety of programs and opportunities — and we do so with world-class faculty members, nationally recognized research; first-rate facilities; a friendly, safe atmosphere; and easy access to some of the best year-round recreation sites in the nation.

The University of Maine values diversity. Our students come from across Maine and from more than 40 states and 70 countries. UMaine offers 90 undergraduate majors and academic programs, 70 master’s degree programs, and 35 doctoral programs. Our library is the largest in the state, we have one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Honors Colleges, and our students enjoy hands-on research, even at the undergraduate level.

UMaine offers comprehensive academic programming- ranging from business to engineering and the arts. Undergraduate and graduate students can find courses in Education and Human Development, Engineering, Honors, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, and Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture.

UMaine has a vibrant campus life. The university offers more than 200 student organizations. And you can always start your own student organization!

Athletics are a major part of student life at the University of Maine. With 17 Division I sports, there are many talented athletes who excel on campus and go on to professional careers. There are also opportunities to participate in club sports- from nordic skiing to tango, tennis, dressage and more.

Right from the start, freshman get to work on building the skills they need after life at UMaine. Faculty members welcome students to work alongside them on research projects, helping students gain workplace experience through close mentor-mentee relationships.

The University of Maine is committed to innovation. The Foster Center for Student Innovation helps students develop their innovative ideas into innovative business models, and develop the skills they need as entrepreneurs.

Awards and Recognitions:

UMaine has a range of different on-campus housing options – traditional residence hall, suite style, graduate housing and family housing. We do not offer homestays. First-year students are required to live on campus. There is a number of off-campus housing options but UMaine does not facilitate this process.

TOEFL requirements: 79 (iBT), IELTS: 6.5 – this English proficiency requirement may be waived under certain circumstances (UStudy can help you determine whether this waiver applies to you).

In addition, secondary school/high school and submission of supporting documents for review are also required (UStudy can help guide you on what documents you need).

*All international students at UMaine are required to have an international health insurance plan. Students can purchase the UMaine international health insurance plan or may use an alternative plan and waive the UMaine plan.
